You can mine a diamond with an iron pickax - if you have, take 2-3 pieces, you can break several picks before you find diamonds. A stone pickaxe will not work for diamond mining, it simply destroys the diamond without getting it. I used 2 pickaxes until I found the first pile of diamonds.
